Perhaps not the cleverest or cutest creature on the planet, the star of the world’s greatest get-together - the wildebeest - is nonetheless a fascinating animal.

Also known as a Gnu, these odd-looking beasts form an essential part of the Mara/Serengeti ecosystem due to the fertilizing effect of the 60 000 tons dung they leave behind.

Instinctively programmed to follow rain patterns, the wildebeest are able to smell rain more than 50 km away. The ‘promised land’ of their annual circuit is the Masai Mara, the best-watered area of the Serengeti/Mara ecosystem.

Over the last months millions of wildebeest, zebras and antelopes have wandered from the Serengeti plains in the South up to the Mara in the pursuit for food and water.
